Lost Season 2
Jan 19th, 2008 by lost
The first season captured our attention with the visual of a plane crashing on a remote island and the ensuing fight to survive. The season ended with two of the main characters, Jack Shepard and John Locke looking down into a hatch that they had spent most of the season trying to open. They finally succeeded with some ancient dynamite found on board a wrecked pirate ship in the middle of the island.
Major points of the plot focused on during season 2 include:
1. The hatch, the numbers and the need to press that button every 108 minutes.
2. Survivors of the planes tail section.
3. The Others, and
4. The discovery that the “hatch†is actually a Dharma Initiative station.
Season 2 begins with the opening of the hatch. It is found to be some sort of bunker with facilities (shower and bathrooms), running water, electric, food, a computer and a mysterious occupant named Desmond. Desmond states that if the numbers 4,8,15,16,23 and 42 are not entered every 108 minutes “the world will end.â€
During the first episode, the computer is broken and Desmond runs off into the forest seeking refuge from the impending doom.
After some discussion of whether or not to believe Desmond’s revelation, Locke takes over pressing the button along with Jack, Michael, Hurley and a couple of others. Without really knowing what might happen, the button is pressed regularly as a measure of faith on Locke’s part and duty on the other’s.
The mystery of the numbers lingers, though.
Hurley totally believes the numbers are malevolent since he used them to win the lottery and has had bad luck ever since. Those numbers identify the hatch and it is a bad omen.
It turns out that the hatch is a scientific station called “the Swan†belonging to the even more mysterious Dharma Initiative.
Now the Others come into view. These are people that belong to the Dharma Initiative and they have been here all along, even before the plane crashed and they are not friendly at all. It seems that they are performing some scientific experiments of some sort, but that is not clear yet.
Led by the notorious and viciously sneaky Ben (who infiltrated the beach survivors as Henry Gale), the Others continue to terrorize the beach survivors. Women and children are taken occasionally at night. The question remaining is “why?â€.
For the first time, we are shown that there may be other survivors of the wreck from the tail section of the plane. The beach survivors originally think that they are the Others, but we see rather quickly that this is not the fact. The tail section survivors numbered 22 in the beginning, but 12 were taken by the others on the first night.
Then on day 27, they found another Dharma station, the Arrow, and inhabited it.
By the end of season 2, a lot of the plot has been resolved, yet the real mysteries still persist. What is Locke’s relationship to the island? What exactly is the Dharma Initiative? Where did they come from? What do they want? Why are they here?
Enough mystery to bring viewers back next season to see what will happen.
I guess we’ll just have to tune in to see.
